AutoFileSync keeps single files, directories or whole directory trees in sync between two places – on your own computer, on a network drive, a USB drive or a machine reachable over SSH. Set it up, start it, forget it.
Developed and maintained by Welsch Software – as free software for everyone.
Automatic synchronisation and backup that you can set up without reading a manual.
Every task is set up as a synchronisation: source, target, what to compare and how to handle special cases. All synchronisations together form the configuration, which is saved as a file.
It is run from within the program – once or continuously – or by a background service that uses the same configuration and works even when nobody is logged in.
AutoFileSync is a project by Welsch Software and fully open source: it is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. Everyone may use the program free of charge, read, modify and redistribute its source code – privately as well as commercially.
The complete source code is available for download here. Bug reports, requests and contributions are welcome by e-mail. Welsch Software develops the program free of charge – voluntary contributions help to cover the costs.
Built for robustness, intuitive use and unattended operation.
A single file, a directory or a whole tree with all its subdirectories. Wildcards restrict what is compared.
Source or target may live on a NAS, a server or another computer in your home network. Remote directories can be browsed in the dialog, passwords are stored encrypted.
Synchronises without the window being open – even when nobody is logged in. Service and program share the configuration and never get in each other's way.
Generations keep older versions, deletions go to a recycle bin, and an unplugged drive is never mistaken for “everything deleted”.
Compare by date, size or content, two-way synchronisation, move instead of copy and a configurable way of handling deleted or newer target files.
A log with a selectable level, e-mail notification on severe errors and a backup record in JSON format that proves when what was backed up.
Ready-made packages for Windows, macOS and Linux are available right here. If you prefer, download the source code and build it yourself.
All files with size and SHA-256 checksum are listed on the downloads page. What changed from version to version is on the releases page.
Windows 10 & 11
Apple Silicon & Intel
Debian, Ubuntu and relatives
C++20, CMake and wxWidgets. Build instructions for every platform are included in the source. The source code is licensed under the GNU GPL v3.
AutoFileSync is developed and maintained by Welsch Software in Oberteuringen on Lake Constance, Germany. The program is deliberately open source: everyone should be able to back up their data reliably, without licence fees and without depending on a vendor.
AutoFileSync is a non-commercial community project: we answer questions about setup and operation by e-mail where we can, and requests and bug reports feed into further development.
AutoFileSync is and will remain free and open source. It is neither sold nor supported for a fee. If you would like to support its further development, there are three ways to do so.
If AutoFileSync is useful to you, Welsch Software appreciates a voluntary contribution via PayPal – you choose the amount, and it helps to cover the costs of development, hosting and maintenance. It is not a tax-deductible donation, and it does not entitle you to anything in return.

Do you need a feature AutoFileSync does not have yet, or does something not fit your environment? Write to us. Requests are collected and, where possible, included in future versions – as free software for everyone.
Report bugs, suggest features, add translations or contribute code: an e-mail is all it takes. Contributions are licensed like the project itself, under the GNU GPL v3.
